⚖️ SafetyWing vs Heymondo

Last updated: 26 August 2026

The comparison that actually changes what happens to you at a hospital admissions desk.

The short version: SafetyWing reimburses you after you pay. Heymondo settles with the clinic directly, if you call first. In countries that demand money before treatment, that is the whole comparison.

We Sell Neither

Our partners are EKTA, Compensair and Klook. We have no affiliate relationship with SafetyWing or Heymondo and earn nothing whichever you pick — which matters here, because both brands sit inside unusually dense affiliate ecosystems that contradict each other on basic facts.

Payment Model Is the Real Difference

Most head-to-heads on these two argue about price and medical limits. Both are secondary to a structural question almost no comparison asks: who hands money to the hospital?

SafetyWing reimburses. You pay the clinic, submit receipts, get paid back. That is how the great majority of travel policies work.

Heymondo settles directly. For hospitalisation and significant expenses its assistance team pays the provider, so you hand over nothing — provided you contact them before you attend. Miss that step and you are back to reimbursement like everyone else.

In most of Europe, North America or Japan this is a convenience question. In a large part of the world it is not, because the hospital wants money or a deposit before it treats a foreigner:

  • Lebanon — major hospitals typically ask foreign patients for a cash deposit of roughly US$1,000–5,000 before admission, even with valid insurance.
  • Cuba — foreign insurers generally cannot transfer funds into the country, so you pay on the spot, and since June 2026 international cards do not work there at all.
  • Hong Kong — the Hospital Authority requires Non-eligible Persons to pay a deposit on admission.
  • Cape Verde — the US State Department states hospitals usually require payment before service.
  • Madagascar, Nepal, Nigeria — payment at the time of treatment is the norm, and evacuation is often cash-in-advance.

A reimbursement policy does not fail in those places. It just does not help you at the moment you need it, and you need a card or cash anyway.

Both Have a Disputed Deductible, and That Says Something

Notice the deductible row. For SafetyWing, independent reviews describe $250 on the Essential plan while a review written in collaboration with the company says it was removed in 2024. For Heymondo, one affiliate review says there is no deductible at all while another gives a worked example of a $250 medical deductible on the long-stay plan.

Neither disagreement is between a company and its critics. Both are between affiliates of the same brand. The likeliest explanation is that terms differ by product and market and reviewers describe whatever they bought — but the practical conclusion is the same either way: the number on your own quote screen is the only one that binds anybody. Check it there, including against this page.

What Each One Is Actually For

SafetyWing is built for open-ended travel where the exposure is medical and the budget is real. Rolling subscription, buy from anywhere, cancel any time, roughly $2 a day. It does not cover trip cancellation and it excludes high-risk sports and pre-existing conditions, and it is not pretending otherwise.

Heymondo is a broader product for people with more at stake: cancellation, sports on most plans, high limits on the upper tiers, an app-based assistance line people genuinely use — and the direct-settlement model. You pay more for that breadth.

How to Choose in One Step

Look at where you are going, not at the policies.

  • Going somewhere hospitals extend credit to foreigners — most of Europe, Japan, Australia, Canada — and your risk is purely medical? SafetyWing does the job for less.
  • Going somewhere payment is demanded up front, or carrying significant prepaid costs, or doing sports? Heymondo, and programme the assistance number into your phone before you fly.
  • Neither, if you have a declared pre-existing condition that matters — you need an insurer that underwrites it rather than excludes it or leaves it to the market wording.

Our Verdict

These are not competing versions of one product and the price gap is not the story. SafetyWing is cheaper because it does less, honestly. Heymondo costs more and includes the one feature that changes what happens at the hospital door.

If your itinerary includes any of the countries listed at the top of this page, direct settlement is worth more than a bigger medical limit — because a limit you cannot access until you have already paid is not the thing standing between you and treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

The payment model. SafetyWing reimburses you after you pay the clinic; Heymondo settles with the provider directly for hospitalisation and significant expenses, provided you contact them before you attend. In countries that demand payment before treatment, that difference decides the outcome.

SafetyWing, particularly for long-term travel, at roughly $2 a day on the Essential plan. It is cheaper because it covers less — no trip cancellation, no high-risk sports — rather than because it is better value at the same scope.

No. Nomad Insurance is travel medical insurance and cancellation before departure is not included at any plan level. Heymondo includes it on its main plans.

For direct settlement, yes. One customer's published account describes going straight to a hospital after an accident without calling, receiving a bill over $3,000, and then claiming it back through the app about two weeks later. Without the call you fall back to ordinary reimbursement.

Heymondo, on the payment model alone. In those countries hospitals commonly want money or a deposit before treating a foreigner, and in Cuba international cards have not worked since June 2026, so a reimbursement-only policy leaves you finding cash at the admissions desk.

Both have disputed deductibles, and in both cases the disagreement is between affiliates of the same brand rather than between the company and its critics. Independent reviews report $250 on SafetyWing Essential; Heymondo reviews split between none and $250 on long-stay. Check your own quote screen.

SafetyWing yes, as a rolling subscription. For Heymondo the sources contradict each other — one 2026 review calls mid-trip purchase impossible, another lists subscription after departure as a strength — so confirm the start-date rules on your quote.
