🇧🇬 Travel Insurance for Bulgaria
Do You Need Travel Insurance for Bulgaria?
Bulgaria's status changed recently, so ignore older guides that still describe it as a partial or non-Schengen case. Bulgaria is now a full member of the Schengen Area and, since 1 January 2026, part of the Eurozone, using the euro. For insurance that means full Schengen rules apply: if you need a Schengen visa to visit, travel insurance is mandatory and must cover at least €30,000 in medical expenses including emergency evacuation and repatriation, valid across the whole Schengen Area. Visa-exempt travellers from the US, UK, EU and around 60 other countries get up to 90 days within any 180-day period without showing a policy — but it remains strongly advised, and from late 2026 these visitors will also need ETIAS authorisation. Note that days spent in Bulgaria now count toward the rolling Schengen 90/180 limit.
Even if insurance is not compulsory for you, it fills a real gap. An EHIC works in Bulgaria for EU citizens and a GHIC for UK citizens, giving access to state healthcare on the same terms as locals — but neither covers private clinics, repatriation, trip cancellation, or baggage. A travel policy covers exactly those risks, and Bulgaria's private medical costs are entirely your responsibility without one.
Healthcare & Medical Costs in Bulgaria
Healthcare in Sofia has improved with private clinics like Tokuda Hospital and Acibadem City Clinic. Outside the capital, facilities are dated. EU citizens can use EHIC but service quality varies. English-speaking doctors are available in Sofia and resort areas.
GP visit: €20–40. Emergency room: €50–150. Hospital day: €100–400 at private facilities. Bulgaria is one of the cheaper EU countries for healthcare, but quality outside Sofia is inconsistent.
Key Risks & Safety Concerns
Ski injuries at Bansko and Borovets are common tourist claims. Summer Black Sea resorts see pickpocketing and tourist scams. Road conditions are poor in rural areas. Stray dogs in urban areas can be aggressive.
Recommended Coverage for Bulgaria
$50,000 minimum for non-EU visitors. Winter sports add-on essential for ski trips. EU citizens should carry EHIC but add supplementary insurance — Bulgarian public hospitals may not meet expectations.
Insider Tips for Bulgaria
If skiing at Bansko, Borovets, or Pamporovo, check that your policy covers winter sports and mountain rescue. Black Sea summer holidays carry moderate risk of theft and alcohol-related incidents. Road trips through rural Bulgaria need coverage for roadside emergencies.
Emergency numbers: 112 (EU emergency), 150 (ambulance)

Yes. Bulgaria is now a full Schengen member and joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2026, so it uses the euro. Time spent in Bulgaria counts toward the Schengen 90/180-day limit, and Schengen-visa holders must show insurance of at least €30,000 including evacuation and repatriation.
