🇭🇷 Travel Insurance for Croatia

Quick Facts: Risk Level: Low • Schengen area (since 2023)

Do You Need Travel Insurance for Croatia?

Whether travel insurance is required for Croatia depends on how you enter. Croatia joined the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023 and adopted the euro at the same time, so it now follows full Schengen rules. If you need a Schengen visa to visit, travel insurance is mandatory: your policy must cover at least €30,000 in medical expenses including emergency evacuation and repatriation, valid across the whole Schengen Area for your entire stay. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, the EU and many others are visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period and do not have to show a policy — though it remains strongly recommended, and from late 2026 these travellers will also need an ETIAS authorisation.

Even visa-free, insurance matters because public healthcare is not free for non-EU tourists. An EHIC or GHIC covers state healthcare for EU and UK visitors at the local rate, but never private treatment, repatriation, trip cancellation, or baggage — so a travel policy fills exactly the gaps a health card leaves open. Croatia's healthcare is good in Zagreb, Split and Rijeka, but a serious emergency or an air repatriation home can still run into tens of thousands of euros.

Healthcare & Medical Costs in Croatia

Croatia has good healthcare, especially in Zagreb and Split. KBC Zagreb is the main teaching hospital. EU citizens can use EHIC for necessary treatment. Coastal areas have adequate facilities during tourist season but can be overwhelmed in summer.

GP visit: €30–60. Emergency room: €100–250. Hospital day: €200–600. Croatia is moderately priced for healthcare compared to Western Europe. Island healthcare is limited — serious cases require transfer to the mainland.

Key Risks & Safety Concerns

Water sports injuries along the Adriatic coast — sailing, diving, cliff jumping. Sunburn and heat stroke in summer (July–August temperatures exceed 35°C). Sea urchin stings are extremely common. Island hopping during storms creates maritime safety risks. Tourist scams in Dubrovnik and Split.

Recommended Coverage for Croatia

$100,000 medical coverage for non-EU visitors. Water sports and diving add-on for coastal activities. Maritime evacuation coverage if island hopping — transfer from islands to Split or Zagreb may be needed.

Insider Tips for Croatia

If sailing the Croatian islands, ensure your policy covers maritime activities and emergency transfer from islands to the mainland. Dubrovnik's narrow streets and walls create fall risks — elderly travelers should check their policy's activity coverage. Summer overcrowding in Dubrovnik means slower emergency response.

Emergency numbers: 112 (EU emergency), 194 (ambulance)
