Do You Need Travel Insurance for Sri Lanka?

Travel insurance is not a legal entry requirement for Sri Lanka, but it is strongly recommended and several governments advise visitors to carry medical and evacuation cover for the full trip. Almost everyone needs an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival, obtained online at the official portal (eta.gov.lk) for a stay of up to 30 days; from 25 May 2026 the ETA is free for nationals of around 40 countries, though the application itself is still mandatory. Your passport should be valid for at least six months, and you may be asked for proof of onward travel and sufficient funds.

The case for insurance is medical. Dengue fever is widespread — particularly in the Western Province around Colombo — and outbreaks intensify in the monsoon months. Good private hospitals exist in Colombo (Lanka Hospitals, Nawaloka), but facilities thin out quickly elsewhere on the island, and hospitals may ask for confirmation of insurance, a guarantee of payment, or an upfront deposit before admitting you. A policy with emergency medical treatment and evacuation cover turns that into a phone call rather than a crisis.

Colombo has adequate private hospitals — Asiri Hospital, Lanka Hospitals, and Nawaloka Hospital. Outside Colombo, facilities are basic. Hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya) and northern/eastern regions have limited healthcare.
