Remote areas need evacuation coverage; extreme weather considerations. As a European destination, travel insurance requirements depend on your nationality. EU/EEA citizens benefit from the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which covers necessary medical treatment, but EHIC does not cover repatriation, mountain rescue, or trip cancellation. Schengen visa applicants must show insurance with minimum €30,000 medical coverage.
GP visit: ISK 5,000–10,000 (€30–60). Emergency room: ISK 15,000–30,000. Hospital day: ISK 50,000–100,000. Iceland is extremely expensive for healthcare. Search and rescue is volunteer-run (ICE-SAR) but can coordinate helicopter evacuation.

Extreme weather — blizzards, volcanic eruptions, glacial floods can occur with little warning. Glacier and ice cave dangers (falling ice, crevasses). Hot spring burns — natural hot springs can be scalding. Road conditions dangerous in winter — F-roads require 4x4 and experience. Rogue waves on black sand beaches (Reynisfjara) have killed tourists.
